Asinara is an island of the Mediterranean Sea, located between the Sardinian Sea in the west, the Corsica Sea in the north and the homonymous gulf in the east; it is separated to the south from the small Isola Piana by a narrow navigable canal, the so-called Passage of the Fornelli. It is part of the municipality of Porto Torres, in the province of Sassari. It has an area of 50.9 km² and is currently inhabited by a few people who have accommodation for work in the island. The last civilian residents who left the island in 1885 before the institution of the penal colony, moved to the area of Stintino, built by themselves, located on Capo Falcone promontory.
